the best love stories...

...are the one with tragic endings.
I am a sucker for stories where the hero and the heroine cannot be together and no other book does it better than this.I've lost count of how many times I've read this book.


Heathcliff, a gypsy foundling was taken in by Mr.Earnshaw, Catherine's father. Catherine's brother Hareton hates Heathcliff and proceeds to make his life miserable.Unabashed or unbroken, he finds a kindred soul in Catherine and they grow up together under the eye of Nelly, the main narrator of this story.
When Catherine meets Edgar Linton however, she realizes that she can never marry Heathcliff although she loves him.
"I've no more business to marry Edgar Linton than I have to be in heaven; and if the
wicked man in there had not brought Heathcliff so low, I shouldn't have thought of it. It would degrade me to
marry Heathcliff now; so he shall never know how I love him: and that, not because he's handsome, Nelly, but
because he's more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same; and Linton's
is as different as a moonbeam from lightning, or frost from fire."
Of course,Heathcliff only hears part of her rantings and is heartbroken and decides to leave for three years, in which time Catherine marries Edgar Linton and moves away from Wuthering Heights.He comes back a rich man,though cruel and determined to have Catherine as his no matter what the cost.Catherine later takes ill and dies, after being alone with Heathcliff and confessing her love for him.When Heathcliff finds out from Nelly that Catherine has passes away, he launches into my FAVOURITE EVER PASSAGE..
"May she wake in torment!' he cried, with frightful vehemence, stamping his foot, and groaning in a sudden paroxysm of ungovernable passion. 'Why, she's a liar to the end! Where is she? Not THERE - not in heaven -not perished - where? Oh! you said you cared nothing for my sufferings! And I pray one prayer - I repeat it till my tongue stiffens - Catherine Earnshaw, may you not rest as long as I am living; you said I killed you - haunt me, then! The murdered DO haunt their murderers, I believe. I know that ghosts HAVE wandered on earth.Be with me always - take any form - drive me mad! only DO not leave me in this abyss, where I cannot find you! Oh, God! it is unutterable! I CANNOT live without my life! I CANNOT live without my soul!"

Is that just not so awesomely-crazy-romantic?To have somebody love you like that,beyond death.
Oh,did I mention Heathcliff is dark,tall and brooding?And he only became what he was because of Catherine selfishness.
Though I sometimes wish they had had some happy ending together,I have come to realize the fact that they don't makes this one of the greatest love story I know.Its not that sappy-Romeo-and-Juliet corny kind of tragic either, sorry Shakespeare, =) but Bronte beat you by a mile!

ps: this post is also especially dedicate to all you people out there who are to lazy to go read the book.
But I beseech you,please!!!
Take some time and read it.Make it your weekend project or yearly project.
JUST READ IT

Not some lousy romance full of make-out scenes in whatever age period

I totally agree.
"Wuthering heights" is my favourite novel. It's... genial! The construction, the characters, the plot, everithing is perfect!
I read this article because I was curious to see the results (images) on Google when the key-words are "Wuthering heights", and I found this blog. I am happy to see that you are also delighted by this book. What's more, every person who read this novel at my recommandation was enchanted! It's... I have no words to describe it.
